Mission, Values, and Domains


The mission of the Office of Assessment & Evaluation is to design, promote, and facilitate a culture of continuous improvement through assessment and evaluation. Assessment and evaluation at VT are reflective practices incorporating systematic investigation that lead to evidence-based decision making. This mission is achieved in collaboration with partners across the university and the broader education community through practices that encourage innovation in student learning and the learning environment.

Why documenting learning matters


The core values of the Office of Assessment & Evaluation are excellence, integrity, continuous improvement, professionalism, innovation, teamwork, diversity, transparency, and scholarship.


  • Student Learning Outcomes — To assess and analyze student learning outcomes to determine areas of strength and areas needing improvement; develop and implement plans to improve student learning.
  • Academic Program Review — To support and facilitate faculty-driven assessment of indicators of academic program quality including the curricula, student learning outcomes, diversity, human and financial resources, and student success; to encourage experimentation and innovation that leads academic programs to better understand, define, and measure quality.

  • Administrative Assessment — To systematically improve the quality of administrative and educational support organizations which complement the academic enterprise. Establish critical outcomes, gauge the level of accomplishment, and guide meaningful continuous improvement.

  • Evaluation and Research — To provide evaluation and research services to a broad array of university, community-based, national, and international organizations to assist them in assessing and improving their programs; to stimulate innovative evaluation projects through the development and implementation of collaborative evaluation projects.
  • Leadership and Outreach in the Academy — To advance the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve); to actively engage intellectual and academic capital to address assessment and evaluation needs of the Virginia Tech community and higher education communities around the commonwealth, the nation, and the world.
